"TEENAGE TUBE ALERT SUSPECT DAMON SMITH 'IN LOVE WITH IS'" (SKY NEWS)

On Saturday 22nd of October, anti-terror police evacuated a home in Newton Abbot after they found an 'item that they deemed as suspicious'.

19 year old Damon Smith was arrested by the police after a controlled explosion was carried out on the item found on a Jubilee Line. According to his friends "Damon was enamoured with Islamic State". It has been said that he would constantly show his friends videos posted by IS of people being executed and burned alive in cages.

Police said he was arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation and instigation of terrorism acts, under section 41 of the terrorism act 2000.

I think that his friends should have told the police that he was so interested by IS as it could have stopped this incident. Although no one was hurt and they are still unaware of what his real intentions were, innocent peoples lives were put in a dangerous situation that could have lead to death.

Media Report
Teen Thriller Films
Jodie Kirk

The thriller genre can be defined as ‘extraordinary events happening to ordinary people’ which allows the audience to escape reality while watching a thriller film. They are also characterised by the moods they give out and heightened feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation and anxiety. However, most thriller films have sub genres such as thriller horror or thriller comedy which also broadens out the target audience for individual films.

Thrillers in general tend to be fast paced, full of suspense pauses, tense and mysterious. This can lead to a dramatic climax and give a greater understanding of the film.

Teenagers are considered to be the largest consumer demographic as they can access all types of news and information through many different platforms. They can influence their friends and other people that they know, to go watch or take part in something. Teenagers want to see advertising that is eye catching and interesting otherwise they will not pay attention to it. Ways to advertise towards a teenage audience can include youtube videos and also advertisements on platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat. Teenagers generally pay attention and like things that they can relate to. For a film, teenagers watch movies that involves people of a similar age or an 'idol' that they look up to e.g. rappers. Examples of teen thriller films include ‘Final Destination’, ‘When a Stranger Calls’ and ‘Divergent’.

While researching different thrillers, I found out that there are a lot of similar themes that come up in trailers and posters. Most of the trailers I watched had blackouts or fades which suggests that they essential for a thriller trailer. This may be because they add suspense to the film which engages the audience, or it could be used as a cliff hanger. All of the trailers had intense or eerie music which adds tension, leading up to the idea that something bad and shocking is going to happen. This is typical for a trailer as it gradually builds up interest in the film. There were also a lot of scenes with low lighting which adds a sense of mystery and also 'the unknown', which intrigues the audience.

Both of these two thriller posters have low lighting and darker areas which suggests evil or mystery. The font is simple however they both have added a twist to the main title on the poster. 'The Gift' has a cut or a slit in its title which creates suspense and an urge to know what will happen. 'The Girl on The Train' is slightly blurred which can make the views wonder why it has been printed like that. It could suggest and illusion or a blurred mind which will make the audience interested into finding out more.

The general codes and conventions of a thriller film trailer:
  • Tend to have a 3 act structure
  • Long shots at the start to establish character
  • Sound effects to build tension
  • Short shots / quick cuts to make excitement
  • Music building to a crescendo

The posters seemed to have a dark colour scheme which connotes evil and possibly mystery. There were unknown characters or figures which creates a sense of the unknown and endless possibilities. These are common features of thriller film advertisement.

Other common features are:
  • Actors name
  • Tag line
  • Main image
  • Title block
  • Release date
  • Billings block
For part of my production I had to create a storyboard or a script. To do this I had to look at a range of trailers, films and TV series to get an idea of what my story line will be. One of the series I watched was Black Mirror. Black Mirror is a Science Fiction genre series created in 2011 however, it had elements of thriller films which is where I got my idea from. There was a lot of anticipation, suspense and plot twists and it allowed you to escape reality while watching it which is what thrillers typically do and it is what teenagers are interested in.

Although my script and storyboard has predominantly female characters, I think my target audience has been identified well because female teenagers would watch this as it may apply to them and they like to see people similar to them and male teenagers would watch this as it involves girls and a party which is what they are interested in.

For my production I created a DVD cover and a poster on photoshop. This creates three pages of coursework. I found a poster that I tried to re-create but also change it so it looks different.
My Poster

Movie Poster I Found

Strengths of my poster is that it has an eye catching format which will engage my target audience and it fits in well with my storyline. The tagline is intriguing and causes mystery which is what you tend to find in thriller films. Teenagers are also mainly interested in people their age and would watch something that involves people their age which is why I chose to use a 17 year old girl as the main image which people may be able to relate to. However, I had difficulties creating this poster as it was looking more like a horror film rather than a thriller. The effect on my poster relates to my tagline of  'reality is just an illusion' as the main image is semi blurred but also slightly red. I used a lot of black on this poster as black connotes danger and mystery. I used a lighter grey background behind the main image to show she is in front of the light, not walking towards it suggesting that something bad has happened to her. I also have an age rating of 15 which clearly tells that the intended audience is teenagers.

The weaknesses of my poster is that you cannot guess the specific story of what this film is about. People could interpret it in different ways which may then possibly lead to them researching the film. The colour scheme is fairly dull which may not interest the audience however the slight tinge of red adds a mysterious effect. As this poster does not have any dates or credits on it, the audience will not know when this film will be released but on all theatrical posters I looked at, they had limited information about the film.

A Theatrical Poster
A Theatrical Poster

This was my original poster idea.

This poster was supposed to be in a photo booth style going from the beginning where both sisters are alive to where one is on her own to then the other sister coming bucket haunt her. At first I thought this was a good idea and the style of the poster was something teenagers would be interested however the story I was trying to tell was not coming through. There is a mixture of bright and dark colours which could me mistaken as not to be a thriller film.

This is my DVD cover.

Front Cover
Back Cover

Strengths of my DVD cover is that it has the same types of images that there are on real ones. It has the barcode and companies that produced the film. It was important to put these on as otherwise it wouldn't look real. The front cover would draw attention to the DVD cover as people would find it interesting to look at and see what it is about. The picture is also similar to the one on my poster so for people who had seen the poster, they would know what the DVD is about if they saw it on a shelf.

Weaknesses of my DVD cover is that the pictures on the back don't show much of the story seeing as all the pictures were taken in the same area therefore making it unrealistic.

Teenage couple found guilty of double murder aged 14

A 14 year old girl and her 14 year old boyfriend has been convicted of a double murder. The couple murdered a dinner lady (aged 49) and her daughter (aged 13). Although this terrible incident happened in April 2016, the police interview has only just been released.

It was said that this attack was pre planned to almost perfection by the girl who has said she was the 'driver' behind the attack. She told the police "I've felt like murdering for quite a while and [the boy] just hates me being upset... it just sort of happened". It is very disturbing to know that some children as young as 14 have temptations and urges to kill innocent people. The pair are thought to be the youngest couple in Britain convicted of a double murder.

In the interview, she admitted that her and the boy had a bag containing 4 knives and knew how exactly they were going to kill both people. The boy pinned the mother to the bed then continuously stabbed her in the throat to kill her, and also in the voice box so she couldn't cry out for help or wake up her daughter. He then did the same to her daughter.

After carrying out the murders the couple took a bath, had sex and settled down to watch the film Twilight. The court had heard that they were thinking of committing suicide by overdose after the murder, however they changed their mind and ate ice cream.

Investigators found the girls diary and in the months leading up to the brutal stabbing she wrote "there is a madness in me" and "death is the only way".

It is really scary to know that children of a young age are having such hideous thoughts. I think both the boy and girl should be put into jail however they should also receive psychological help as this situation is not normal. Also, knowing the couple had sex and watched a film after is horrific as they clearly show no regret for the murder of two innocent people.

This story can be linked to the famous Bonnie and Clyde. They were American criminals who travelled in the Central USA, robbing and killing people. They're famously known for their tragic love story as they went around killing people together because they were in love. Research has shown that Bonnie may've had a mental disorder that made her attracted to very violent men. Also, there is now a sexual fetish called hybristophilia (also known as Bonnie and Clyde syndrome) which is shown today through many admirers that convicted murderers attract.

According to police investigators there was a "intense attraction, emotional closeness - them against the world" which is likely to be one of the reasons behind the killings.

Elephant rushes to rescue 'drowning' keeper (DAILY MAIL)

Trainer Darrick Thomson said he had made an 'inseparable bond' with Kham Lha the elephant since she arrived at the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai over a year ago. Video's show how Kham rushed into the river to try and save her trainer, which is pretty incredible. Although the trainer was not actually in trouble, he still allowed Kham to rescue him.

Before Kham arrived at the Elephant Nature Park, "she had been tied up and forced to undergo cruel training known as crushing to prepare her to work in the tourist industry". This video shows that if you're kind to animals, look after them well and show them love, they'll do the exact same for you. Humans and animals can form amazing bonds however a lot of animals are mistreated and not taken care of which is why they sometimes end up killing people.

This story can be linked to the petting story of the killing of Harambe on May 28th 2016. It was reported that a 3 year old boy climbed into a gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo as he wanted to have a closer look at the gorillas. The boy climbed a 3 foot tall fence and crawled through 4 feet of bushes to then fall 15 feet into shallow water. Although guards did signal for the 3 gorillas to go inside the caves, Harambe didn't listen. Video's show Harambe aggressively dragging the child around the rocks however it appears that he didn't mean any harm. Pictures were taken of Harambe holding the child's hand but unfortunately, guards decided to shoot Harambe to 'save' the child.

Personally, I think that Harambe should not have been killed as it was the child's fault for entering the enclosure despite many signs saying not to climb over the fence. Also, the parents should have been watching their child. Both the Zoo and the parents are fully to blame. Harambe was only trying to protect the child but he ended up getting killed the day after he turned 17.

Miranda Kerr's security guard's stabbed in eye before intruder is shot' at model's Malibu home (Mirror)

On Friday, an intruder damaged the gates of Miranda Kerr and attempted to get inside the beautiful Malibu home. However, her body guard saw and shot the intruder in the head after having a brutal fight with him and getting stabbed in the eye. Both of them are currently in hospital. The intruder was taken to a local hospital but the body guard was airlifted to an A&E department. Luckily, Miranda and her 5 year old son were not at hime during this incident.

This can be compared to the shocking robbery and hostage of Kim Kardashian in Paris around two weeks ago. Kim Kardashian was physically attacked by armed robbers and had over $11 million worth of jewellery stole, however her body guard wasn't seen at all during the incident.

Inside Man

Inside man is a American Thriller/Drama directed by Spike Lee in 2006. It is about a man who has the perfect plan to rob a bank, while keeping innocent people hostage. The detectives have to follow his plan but also try to make sure everyone remains unhurt.

Detective Keith Fraizer (Denzel Washington) is a new detective who hasn't had his 'big break' yet. He is very excited to start on this unexpected case, however he did seem nervous as it was such a huge scenario as it is a bank heist on Wall Street. Throughout the film, he is shown to have a great sense of humour while being serious about the situation. He is a smart thinker who thinks outside the box and looks for the finer details of the case. He was told to close the case by the head of department however he realised there was something still missing, which is how he ends up solving the case. He was able to work under pressure through challenging situations as innocent peoples lives were at risk.

Dalton Russel (Clive Owen) is the man who robbed the bank. Although he had helpers, he was the one that came up with the plan and executed it perfectly. He does not show much emotion throughout the film, meaning that his character is hard to read. However, he is very intelligent and he knows what he wants. He always sticks to his plan which tells us that he likes to be organised.

Madeleine White (Jodie Foster) is a cunning lady who gets everything she wants. She is very smart and always knows how to negotiate with people. She acts very loyal during the film however she is very secretive. She is always one step ahead of the detectives until the end of the film when Detective Fraizer closes the case as he realised what was going on. She can come across as arrogant but at the end of the day, it fits in with her job role.

Claude Levi Strauss

Claude Levi Strauss came up with the idea of binary opposition. Binary meaning 'involving two things' and opposition meaning 'two things that are in conflict with each other'.

Some examples of binary opposition are...

- Good vs Evil
- Love vs Hate
- Big vs Small
- Light vs Dark

Vladimir Propp

Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp analysed the basic plot components of Russian folk tales to identify their simplest irreducible narrative elements. This is how he came up with Character Types.

These characters include;

- The hero
- The villain
- The helper
- The mentor
- The prize / princess
- The donor
- The blocker

The hero's role is to defeat the villain and bring everything back to normal.
The villain's role is to try and defeat the hero.
The helper's role is to assist the hero.
The mentor's role is to teach the hero skills that will be needed to defeat the villain.
The prize / princess is what the villain and hero are fighting over.
The donor's role is to supply the hero with equipment that is needed.
The blocker's role is to try help the villain defeat the hero.

Tzvetan Todorov

Tzvetan Todorov is a historian, philosopher and sociologist. He realised that each film tends to follow a similar structure.

This is Todorov's 5 part narrative structure.

1. Equilibrium
2. Disruption of equilibrium
3. Recognition of disruption
4. Attempt of repair
5. New equilibrium

An equilibrium is at the state where everything is seen as 'normal'.
The disruption is where an event is said to take place.
The recognition is where the characters realise they are in danger.
An attempt to repair is when the hero tries to overcome this event.
The new equilibrium is the new normal.

There is a clear structure similar to this in The Hunger Games.

Equilibrium - Katniss is living her normal day to day life as the official hunger games approaches
Disruption - Primrose (her sister) gets chosen to fight so Katniss volunteers to take her place
Recognition - Katniss and Peeta are in the training camp practising to fight against the opposition
Attempt - Katniss and Peeta fight for survival
New Equilibrium - They both survive and get to go back home

DONALD TRUMP; MORE SEXIST TAPES EMERGE.

Numerous misogynistic comments are continuously being made by Donald Trump during various interviews.

During an interview, Trump glorifies the fact they he lost his virginity at the age of 14 to a "hot little girl". This just goes to show how immature he is and unfit for president of the USA. The conversation then goes on, talking about Ivanka's, his daughters, boobs. Trump admitted that "she's actually always been very voluptuous" and previously he has said that "if Ivanka weren't my daughter, perhaps I'd be dating her". Personally, I find comments like that disgusting as it is promoting someone who is 70 being able to have a sexual relationship with someone for their body as he has also previously stated "she has the best body I've ever seen" and "she's a piece of ass".

He also then carried on to say that he preferred to leave ladies as they age. This is because he believes that "what is it at 35? It's called check-out time". Many feminists, if not all would disagree with this statement as it completely objectifies women as sex toys for men, and once the hit a certain age, they are done.

UNFRIENDED

"One night, while teenagers Blaire, Mitch, Jess, Adam Ken and Val take part in an online group chat session, they are suddenly joined by a user known only as "Billie227." Thinking it's just a technical glitch, the friends carry on their conversation... until Blaire begins receiving messages from someone claiming to be Laura Barns, a classmate who killed herself exactly one year prior. As Blaire tries to expose Billie's identity, her friends are forced to confront their darkest secrets and lies."

Unfriended is a teenage thriller film however it cross links with horror and mystery.

The trailer uses a lot of silent moments and blackouts which creates suspense and a lot of mystery. Quick cuts are used to give an insight as to what the film contains and to almost scare the viewers. It gradually gets fast pace which adds excitement. As it involves teenagers, it could make some think that this scenario could become a reality.
